Inside Chanel’s 15th Annual Tribeca Film Festival Artists Dinner with Robert De Niro, Penelope Cruz, Andrew Garfield, Christy Turlington and More
Last night at Balthazar Restaurant in lower Manhattan, Chanel brought glamor and revelry back to the Tribeca Film Festival. Following a two-year pause, the French fashion house’s annual Tribeca Artists Dinner assembled the city’s brightest filmmakers, actors, models, and writers to pay homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s tradition of wining and dining the leading artists of her time. This year, a buzzy curation of contemporary works—including by Garry Simmons, Deborah Roberts, Nicoletta Darita de la Brown, February James, Ming Smith, Leilah Babirye, Ouattara Watts, Hank Willis Thomas, Nina Chanel Abney and Wardell Milan—were commissioned for the film festival’s winners as prizes, to be presented on June 16. Robert De Niro and Penelope Cruz took a tour of the restaurant’s bakery. Andrew Garfield laughed with Ed Burns and Christy Turlington. Lucy Boynton gushed about how much fun she’s had serving on the film festival’s jury. Kyra Sedgwick held court with Darren Aronofsky. Coffee table books from artists ranging from de Kooning to Koons scattered the seats, while champagne flutes, steak frites, and profiteroles filled the tables. At midnight, the cobblestone streets of Soho were filled with the sound of Chanel pumps strutting into the night.
